Michelle, I agree with you. It is hard to bear these atrocities, and all of the others in this world, even when they happen so far away from us. We read the balanced and the less-balanced accounts of the whys and wherefores, and can only know in the end how fortunate we are if we have been lucky enough to live in these islands in relative peace in our lifetimes. I have beloved friends and colleagues dying too young; my only response can be that each morning when I rise, and each evening when I retire, I give thanks for the little everyday miracle of being alive. I try each day to meet aggression, impatience, rudeness, meanness and crudeness (which I must have in me too) with their opposites: pacifism, patience, courtesy, generosity and grace. The practice itself creates a positive energy (which might include positively-charged outrage and protest in the public realm but also helps me not to be disabled by fear and loathing in my private realm.)
St Francis of Assisi: “A single sunbeam is enough to cast away many shadows.”
I’m in London but I hope to visit your retreat very soon, and after that to bring my own group to share its positive energy. Thank you…..and namaste
